Why jewellery is weighed in grams

The gram is the unit almost every jeweller and scrap buyer outside the United States works in, and it is the one your kitchen scale reads. It is small enough that a wedding band lands somewhere between 2 and 8 grams, which makes it a comfortable unit for talking about single pieces.

It matters that a gram is a gram everywhere. The ounce is not - there are two of them, and they differ by about 9%. If you are comparing offers from different buyers, converting everything to grams first removes the most common source of confusion in the whole transaction.

What a gram of gold looks like

One gram of pure gold is roughly the size of a grain of rice. Gold is dense - about 19.3 times heavier than water - so a small piece weighs far more than people expect, and a large hollow piece weighs far less. Hollow rope chains and puffed hoops are the usual disappointment: they look substantial and weigh almost nothing.

Questions people ask

How many grams are in an ounce of gold?
31.1034768 grams in a troy ounce, which is the unit gold is quoted in. Not 28.35 - that is the ordinary ounce used for food, and it is about 9.7% lighter. One troy ounce is $4,415.43 and one gram is $141.96.
How much is one gram of gold worth today?
One gram of gold is worth $141.96 at the current spot price of $4,415.43 per troy ounce. Spot is quoted for 100% fine gold, so 24K jewellery at 99.9% comes out fractionally lower. Either way it is the metal value only, before any dealer margin.
How much is 14K gold worth per gram?
14K gold is 58.33% pure, so one gram is worth $82.80 right now. 18K works out to $106.47 and 24K to $141.82. Multiply the pure-gold price by the karat fraction and you get the same answer.
How do you convert the gold price to a gram?
Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1034768 to get the price per gram, then multiply by the grams in your unit. One gram is 1 gram, so 4,415.43 / 31.1034768 x 1 = $141.96.
Will a gold buyer pay me this gram price?
No. This is the melt value of the metal at spot. Every buyer deducts refining costs, overheads and a margin, so the offer is a percentage of this number rather than the number itself. Treat it as the ceiling.
Is the gold price up or down today?
Gold is up $39.24 (0.90%) against the price 24 hours ago of $4,376.19 per troy ounce.
What is the highest and lowest gold has traded today?
Today's range is $4,376.19 to $4,425.72 per troy ounce, measured across 41 readings recorded on this site at 15-minute intervals.
Is this the spot price or the futures price?
Spot. It is the price for immediate settlement of one troy ounce, quoted as XAU/USD. Many pages that rank for "gold price today" quote the futures contract instead, which trades at a different level - often tens of dollars apart - and rarely say which one they are showing.
How often does this price update?
The live figure refreshes continuously from the market feed. A snapshot is written to our own database every 15 minutes, and 3.2 days of that record now exists, which is what the chart and the daily change are measured against.
