What 10K actually means

Ten karat is the workhorse. Class rings, men’s chains, service awards, most of what American jewellers sold by weight for a century — it exists because 41.7% gold takes daily wear that would deform 18K, and it survives decades of it. That durability is why so much of what comes out of inherited jewellery boxes tests at 10K, and why the buyer across the counter has priced a hundred pieces exactly like yours.

The arithmetic is the part that stings: a chain that feels substantial in the hand is more than half copper, silver and zinc, and none of that half earns a cent. Worse, 10K is where the payout spread runs widest — refining costs the same per batch whatever the purity, so with less gold to recover, the fixed costs eat a bigger share of yours. Nowhere does getting a second quote change the outcome more than at this karat.

One housekeeping note on the famous “legal minimum”: for generations US trade rules did set 10K as the floor for calling something gold. A 2018 revision of the FTC’s jewelry guides now allows lower purities with clear disclosure — but the trade habit survives intact, and anything under 10K remains a rarity in an American case.

Typical weights, if you have no scale
Item Usual weight
Thin chain (16–18in) 2 – 5 g
Medium chain (20in) 8 – 20 g
Heavy rope chain 25 – 60 g
Plain wedding band 2 – 8 g
Men's signet ring 6 – 15 g
Engagement ring (setting only) 2 – 5 g
Stud earrings (pair) 1 – 3 g
Hoop earrings (pair) 2 – 8 g
Charm bracelet 10 – 30 g
Pocket watch case 20 – 50 g
Dental crown 1 – 3 g

These are ranges because the real answer varies enormously — a wedding band can be 2g or 12g. Any kitchen scale that reads to 0.1g will beat every estimate on this table.

Questions people ask

How much is 10K gold worth per gram today?
10K gold is worth $55.27 per gram right now. It is 41.67% pure, so each gram contains 0.4167 grams of actual gold, valued at the live spot price of $4,125.39 per troy ounce.
How much is a 10K gold chain or ring worth?
It depends entirely on weight, so weigh it first. As a guide at today's price: thin chain (16–18in) (2 – 5 g) is roughly $110.54 to $276.34; medium chain (20in) (8 – 20 g) is roughly $442.15 to $1,105.37; heavy rope chain (25 – 60 g) is roughly $1,381.72 to $3,316.12. These are metal values, not offers.
Is 10K gold real gold?
Yes. 10K means 10 parts in 24 are gold, or 41.67% by weight. The rest is alloy metal added for hardness and colour - pure gold is too soft to hold a stone or survive daily wear.
What hallmark is stamped on 10K gold?
Stamped 417, sometimes 10KT or 10KP. Slightly weak acid-test results are normal at this karat and are not by themselves evidence of fake.
Will a gold buyer pay me this amount?
No, and any site implying otherwise is misleading you. This is the melt value - what the metal alone is worth at spot. Refining, testing and the buyer's margin all come out of it, so a real offer is a percentage of this figure. Treat it as the ceiling and get more than one quote.
How current is this price?
The calculation uses the live spot price, currently $4,125.39 per troy ounce from swissquote, read at 18:45 UTC. It is not a cached daily figure.
