What 9K actually means

Turn a 9K piece over and it tells you where it has been. British and Irish gold carries a full hallmark set: the maker’s initials, the fineness number 375, an assay office symbol — an anchor for Birmingham, a leopard’s head for London — and often a date letter that pins the year it was tested. American jewellery carries a bare karat stamp; a hallmarked 375 piece in a US jewellery box is nearly always someone’s grandmother’s, carried over an ocean.

Because it is under two-fifths gold, 9K behaves partly like its base metals: old pieces can dull or faintly discolour where pure-gold jewellery never would. A gentle polish fixes the surface; it says nothing about the gold underneath, and the calculator above prices exactly what is underneath.

Selling it in the US takes one extra ounce of patience. Counters that see 375 rarely sometimes quote it awkwardly or wave it off as “not real gold” — a description of an old labelling convention, not of the metal. The right response is arithmetic: 37.5% of the weight is gold at the live price, and any buyer who will not start from that number is not your buyer.

Stamped 375, usually with British assay marks. Real gold at a purity American trade habit simply never adopted.

Typical weights, if you have no scale
Item Usual weight
Thin chain (16–18in) 2 – 5 g
Medium chain (20in) 8 – 20 g
Heavy rope chain 25 – 60 g
Plain wedding band 2 – 8 g
Men's signet ring 6 – 15 g
Engagement ring (setting only) 2 – 5 g
Stud earrings (pair) 1 – 3 g
Hoop earrings (pair) 2 – 8 g
Charm bracelet 10 – 30 g
Pocket watch case 20 – 50 g
Dental crown 1 – 3 g

These are ranges because the real answer varies enormously — a wedding band can be 2g or 12g. Any kitchen scale that reads to 0.1g will beat every estimate on this table.

Questions people ask

How much is 9K gold worth per gram today?
9K gold is worth $49.74 per gram right now. It is 37.50% pure, so each gram contains 0.3750 grams of actual gold, valued at the live spot price of $4,125.39 per troy ounce.
How much is a 9K gold chain or ring worth?
It depends entirely on weight, so weigh it first. As a guide at today's price: thin chain (16–18in) (2 – 5 g) is roughly $99.48 to $248.69; medium chain (20in) (8 – 20 g) is roughly $397.90 to $994.76; heavy rope chain (25 – 60 g) is roughly $1,243.45 to $2,984.27. These are metal values, not offers.
Is 9K gold real gold?
Yes. 9K means 9 parts in 24 are gold, or 37.50% by weight. The rest is alloy metal added for hardness and colour - pure gold is too soft to hold a stone or survive daily wear.
What hallmark is stamped on 9K gold?
Stamped 375, usually with British assay marks. Real gold at a purity American trade habit simply never adopted.
Will a gold buyer pay me this amount?
No, and any site implying otherwise is misleading you. This is the melt value - what the metal alone is worth at spot. Refining, testing and the buyer's margin all come out of it, so a real offer is a percentage of this figure. Treat it as the ceiling and get more than one quote.
How current is this price?
The calculation uses the live spot price, currently $4,125.39 per troy ounce from swissquote, read at 18:45 UTC. It is not a cached daily figure.
