How Much Is 24K Gold Worth Per Gram Today?

24K gold is worth $132.50 per gram right now. That is 99.90% pure gold by weight, priced at the live spot rate.

Twenty-four karat gold is 999 fine — as close to pure as refined bullion gets. It is what coins and bars are made of, and almost never what jewelry is made of, because pure gold is soft enough to deform under a fingernail.

Based on a spot price of $4,125.39 per troy ounce, from swissquote.

What 24K actually means

If you are holding something stamped 24K, it is most likely a bullion coin, a bar, or an imported piece from Asia or the Middle East where high-karat jewelry is traditional. American-made jewelry is essentially never 24K.

One practical consequence: 24K is the easiest thing to sell. A dealer buying a recognised one-ounce coin does not need to test it, does not need to refine it, and can resell it the same day — so the spread between what they pay and spot is far narrower than on scrap jewelry. Expect to do better here than any figure on this page suggests for mixed scrap.

The calculator uses 0.999 rather than 1.000. Treating refined bullion as chemically pure overstates every 24K figure by roughly a tenth of a percent.

Typical weights, if you have no scale
Item Usual weight
Thin chain (16–18in) 2 – 5 g
Medium chain (20in) 8 – 20 g
Heavy rope chain 25 – 60 g
Plain wedding band 2 – 8 g
Men's signet ring 6 – 15 g
Engagement ring (setting only) 2 – 5 g
Stud earrings (pair) 1 – 3 g
Hoop earrings (pair) 2 – 8 g
Charm bracelet 10 – 30 g
Pocket watch case 20 – 50 g
Dental crown 1 – 3 g

These are ranges because the real answer varies enormously — a wedding band can be 2g or 12g. Any kitchen scale that reads to 0.1g will beat every estimate on this table.

Questions people ask

How much is 24K gold worth per gram today?
24K gold is worth $132.50 per gram right now. It is 99.90% pure, so each gram contains 0.9990 grams of actual gold, valued at the live spot price of $4,125.39 per troy ounce.
How much is a 24K gold chain or ring worth?
It depends entirely on weight, so weigh it first. As a guide at today's price: thin chain (16–18in) (2 – 5 g) is roughly $265.00 to $662.51; medium chain (20in) (8 – 20 g) is roughly $1,060.01 to $2,650.03; heavy rope chain (25 – 60 g) is roughly $3,312.54 to $7,950.10. These are metal values, not offers.
Is 24K gold real gold?
Yes. 24K means 24 parts in 24 are gold, or 99.90% by weight. The rest is alloy metal added for hardness and colour - pure gold is too soft to hold a stone or survive daily wear.
What hallmark is stamped on 24K gold?
The calculator uses 0.999 rather than 1.000. Treating refined bullion as chemically pure overstates every 24K figure by roughly a tenth of a percent.
Will a gold buyer pay me this amount?
No, and any site implying otherwise is misleading you. This is the melt value - what the metal alone is worth at spot. Refining, testing and the buyer's margin all come out of it, so a real offer is a percentage of this figure. Treat it as the ceiling and get more than one quote.
How current is this price?
The calculation uses the live spot price, currently $4,125.39 per troy ounce from swissquote, read at 18:45 UTC. It is not a cached daily figure.
