The American shadow over Canadian gold prices

Four nines: the Maple standard
The Royal Canadian Mint pioneered .9999 “four nines” bullion with the Gold Maple Leaf, and that purity is now the default form Canadian investment gold takes. It also marks the tax boundary: gold of 99.5% purity or better in bullion form is exempt from GST/HST, while jewellery is taxed like any other purchase — one more reason the same dollar buys more metal as a Maple than as a chain.
